Product overview: Fluke 88V Deluxe Automotive Multimeter

The Fluke 88V meter has measurement functions, troubleshooting features, and accuracy levels needed to solve problems on conventional and hybrid vehicles. The 88V is the most powerful automotive multimeter ever offered by Fluke. In addition to standard multimeter features such as the ability to measure voltage, current, continuity, and resistance, the 88V can perform:

Pulse width

Duty cycle

Min/Max/Average recording

Diode tests

The pulse width function provides millisecond resolution for troubleshooting fuel injectors.

Automotive measurements

The 88V meter can take care of many automotive needs, getting into more of the digital multimeters measurement capabilities - it can measure voltage up to 1000 V AC and DC, current up to 10 A, 20 A for up to 30 seconds and frequency to 200 kHz and % duty cycle. Add those features to RPM measurements with optional inductive pickup and millisecond pulse width measurements for fuel injectors to name a few. The 88V comes packed with the functions you need:

Temperature measurements with optional temperature probe

Analog bar graph to track changing or unstable signals

Min/Max/Average recording with Min/Max Alert to capture variations automatically

Peak Min/Max to record transients as fast as 250 μs

88V multimeter designed for the garage

While working in a garage, the large display digits can help you focus on the vehicle while still being able to read the numbers. Plus, the two-level bright white backlight offers the additional visibility you may need.

An optional magnetic hanger lets you hang the meter from most steel surfaces for easy set-up and viewing. The 88V is designed to be used in high energy environments like those found on hybrid vehicles.

The product is supported by a limited lifetime warranty.

Specs say it will measure RPM. Does the required probe come with this? If not what is the P/N for it?

Asked by: Greesmonky
The Fluke 88V can measure RPM by either using the test leads and connecting them to a RPM sensor or using the RPM80 accessory and clamp around a spark plug cable. The part number for the RPM80 is “880849.”

Does this 88v have true rms? Is that not critical between home and automotive diagnostics? Looking to cover both needs with one meter

Asked by: Mje22
No, the Fluke-88V is not a True RMS meter. Since automotive measurements are typically only made on DC circuits a true-RMS meter is not necessary. Similarly, the AC circuits in homes are normally clean and without distorted waveforms. Typical examples of workloads where a true-RMS meter is recommended would be variable-speed motor drives, electronic ballasts, computers, and HVAC systems.

Is there a master list of accessories that are compatible with this meter? Specifically the i410 AC/DC current clamp. Also would be interested in a phototach and different temp probes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just an absolutely great meter I have had my 88v for about 10 years now. It's been dropped from ladders, gone thru sitting in extreme heat of Nevada sun to transmitter towers on mountains 10000' middle of winter.... It's been exposed to over current and voltage on resistance setting and it still holds accurate readings with the only issue I've ever had is when moisture got into the test lead section. Causing it to think it was in current test. Plus this meter has just about any measurement one could ever need to make except inductance. If it had that it would be the near perfect meter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Many features for automotive I received the 88V for Christmas and it was a gift for my participation in an automotive repair internship. Using the meter for a few tasks really showed me the many scientific features– for example the water temperature of the swimming pool was taken to compare the results with a weather service. Verifying good electrical grounds on vehicle components, and checking the resistance of installed automotive wiring makes diagnosing and installing more accurate. Protecting the meter seems easy with the yellow bumper case. There are many accessories that can be used like the temperature reading probes, direct current reading meter clamp, alligator clamp probes, thin-wire precision probes and probes that can be inserted into the wire by needling the probe-needle through the wires conduit. Personally, the meter has been used only a few times but it has performed very well. The jobs that the meter was used for are okay. The display is large and easy to read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great DMM!!! This is the best multimeter that I have ever used. I have been in the automotive industry for 25 years. I have worked everywhere from independent service shops to dealerships to automotive manufacturers. I have used many different types of DMMs none can compare with the fluke 88. It is easy to use, nice large read out. Perfect for all automotive test. I have owned this one for 20 years
