Education Program: Teaching Materials

Supplemental Curriculum for Practical Measurement Application Training

Bridge the gap between theory and application with materials designed to explain what measurement to take in which situation, with which kind of test tool, and how to use the information you gather.

For any application involving live electrical systems, make sure to begin with the electrical safety materials.

Electrical Measurement Safety

Education Program: Teaching MaterialsUnderstanding how to make measurements safely is extremely important for anyone who works with electricity. This module contains information to help you teach students how to work safely and avoid common safety hazards such as shocks, burns, and fire. It describes the four IEC 61010 Categories in an accessible way, as well as guidance on how to operate safely in each category. The module also covers what to look for in selecting safe test tools, how to perform periodic safety inspections on them, and how to choose the right leads and fuses. Materials include: PowerPoint presentation, application notes, and IEC CAT rating and PPE poster.

Basic Electrical Measurement

Education Program: Teaching MaterialsThis module provides supplemental materials for teaching students the basics of electrical measurement using a digital multimeter (DMM) and other test tools. They'll learn how a DMM works, how to measure a variety of electrical parameters, and how to test components. The module also covers safety specifications, safe operation of a DMM, and the difference between true-rms and average-responding measurements. Materials include: PowerPoint presentation, application notes, and a color poster illustrating Ohm's Law.

Maintaining and Troubleshooting HVAC/R Systems

Education Program: Teaching MaterialsPractical information for measurement applications supporting heating and cooling system maintenance and troubleshooting. Use the information in this module to help your students build a solid understanding of HVAC/R fundamentals, increase their tool know-how, and prepare them to troubleshoot. They'll learn about effective infrared temperature measurement, quick checks to prevent premature motor failures, and how to troubleshoot combustion heating equipment. The module also covers refrigeration superheat and subcooling measurement, and troubleshooting fossil fuel heating equipment and heat pump systems. Materials include: PowerPoint presentation with hands-on exercises and illustrated application notes, three wall posters and handy pressure temperature chart pocket guides you can hand out to students.

Motor Troubleshooting and Maintenance

Education Program: Teaching MaterialsA few key measurements go a long way toward maintaining optimum motor efficiency, including voltage, current, temperature, and ohms. This module provides application notes and case studies, a lengthy PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes, and a poster illustrating key measurements. Note: For additional materials, reference the Fluke education modules: Electrical Measurements on Adjustable-Speed Drives and Insulation Resistance Testing.

Insulation Resistance Testing

Education Program: Teaching MaterialsChecking the integrity of insulation is not only smart for insuring the safety of electrical installations, but also a tremendous tool for predictive maintenance, extending operating life and preventing equipment failures. This module helps students learn the basics of insulation resistance testing, showing them how to determine the integrity of windings or cables in motors, transformers, switchgear, and other electrical equipment. They'll learn how to choose the right test method, and use testers, plus common applications for motor technicians, plant maintenance, utility workers, and electricians. Materials include a PowerPoint presentation, multiple application notes and case studies.

Harmonics

Education Program: Teaching MaterialsThis module teaches the basic understanding of harmonics that students will need to become effective power quality troubleshooters. The essential theory covers linear and non-linear loads; waveform distortion; the harmonic spectrum; problems caused by harmonics; and true-rms measurements.

Power Quality

When sensitive networks control electronically noisy machinery, power quality conflicts result, causing downtime, equipment problems, and excessive energy costs. This module provides application notes, a lengthy PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes, and a poster illustrating common power quality measurements.

Electrical Measurements on Adjustable-Speed Drives

When adjustable-speed drives are introduced to a system, motor troubleshooting practices change as well. This module maps out a systematic troubleshooting approach for isolating problems. Then, it helps you walk students through electrical measurements involved in installing and commissioning a drive. They will also learn how to safely use test equipment to diagnose bad components or other failures. Materials include: PowerPoint presentation with bonus measurement lessons, supported by application notes.

Thermography

Education Program: Teaching MaterialsTeach your students how to avoid the common mis-steps of thermal imaging: reflectivity and emissivity. Get a basic lesson in thermodynamics and operating thermal imagers. This module provides multiple application notes, case studies and training articles, a PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes, and a poster illustrating thermal imaging applications.

Process Instrument Calibration and Maintenance

This module emphasizes process control loop and calibration basics, including essential theory, standards, terms and concepts. Use this module to help your students learn basic control loop, pressure, and temperature calibration, including applications, maintenance and troubleshooting. Highlights of this CD include multiple PowerPoint presentations with several hands-on lab activities and in-depth application notes.

ABCs of Oscilloscopes

Education Program: Teaching MaterialsIntermittent current and voltage surges, mains harmonics and EMI can all interrupt electrical and electronic processes without a trace, with expensive consequences. Fortunately, these intermittents fall into fairly consistent categories and can be tracked down, if technicians understand how to use an oscilloscope. This module emphasizes basic oscilloscope concepts and practices, set-up, waveform identification and troubleshooting techniques. Use this module to help your students become familiar with waveforms, understand where they are useful and feel comfortable with basic operations. Module includes a PowerPoint presentation and application notes.

Indoor Air Quality

Education Program: Teaching MaterialsBasics theory and applications for measuring outside air balance, CO2, CO, velocity, temperature and humdity using electronic meters. This module provides application notes, case studies, and training articles, a PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes, and a poster illustrating ASHRAE standards.
