Reviews: Fluke 101 Digital Multimeter

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent toolbox meter I have a good collection of multimeters of various specifications ranging from sub £200 to over £2000 bench meters, but even the smallest of these is a bit of a beast size wise. What I needed was a small, but reliable meter that is tough enough to live in my toolbox, so I always have a meter to hand. I saw Adam Savage's Favourite Tools tools video, where he waxes lyrical about the Fluke 101, so I thought I would give it a go. The bad news is that, in the UK anyway, this is a difficult meter to lay your hands on for reasons that remain obscure, but through the usual online suspects, you can get hold of them. Having received the meter today, I was keen to run it up against my bench multimeter to test it and, to cut a long story short, I'm suitably impressed. The tests I undertook showed it to be well within specification across all of it's features. It feels robust, the controls are easy to use with a positive rotary control that's offers a positive notch engagement on each setting and can easily be manipulated with one hand. The large display is easy to read and the auto ranging feature is quick to respond to fluctuations in signal without being too jittery as to be annoying. It's a joy to use. The only two criticisms I have are that the magnetic strap stand that comes with the meter, doesn't fit on to the meter in a way that makes it a friendly, always on attachment. Having something similar that wraps around the meter so you don't have to take it off before storage would be better. However, once attached it does the job, i.e. keeping the meter upright. The other minor niggle is that the leads are not up to the usual fluke standard. They're not too bad, but the tips are not that sharp and the leads are not the soft, supple, high silicone content variety that are supplied with other Fluke meters I've bought. The bottom line is that the minor niggles I have fade into insignificance when the price point is is taken into consideration, however. The Fluke 101 is an excellent multimeter and a worthy addition to my toolbox.
