Predictive Maintenance:

Logging Multimeters

Logging digital multimeters, like the Fluke 189, can be powerful front-line predictive maintenance tools. It is extremely expensive to install permanent sensors that measure a facilities entire electrical parameters and feed that information back to a data historian, but the 189 gives you the flexibility to monitor and track any system when permanent system installation is cost prohibitive.

Common Uses

When used in conjunction with FlukeView Forms, the 189 gives you the opportunity to measure and log over 20 electrical parameters including temperature. This information can then be downloaded to a PC where the data can be over-laid on top of data from up to six different time periods or six other meters.

This allows the user to look for cause and effect relationships or to watch for changes over time for predictive maintenance applications.

Application Reference – Log Current and Voltage measurements

Recently, a Fluke customer was using several 189's to monitor the performance of a draw-bridge. He used 189's to measure current and voltage on the motor used to raise the bridge. He also used a unit to log output information from different torque sensors in the bridge.

By doing this, the technician was able to determine that the bridge was safely operating within its design parameters and also has baseline information he can use to check against in the future to watch for mechanical and electrical problems.

Please see the Fluke Application Note "Event Logging with a Fluke 189" for details on more applications.
