Energy Basics:
What is energy?

• Energy is measured in Joule (j).
• The energy of one Joule in one second = one Watt (W).
• We use energy to produce work.
• When we do, a part of the original energy is transformed into thermal energy.
• We call that energy loss and the amount of that loss defines the efficiency of a process.
• Ideal electric motor efficiency is 80-90%.
• That means 80-90% of the electrical energy is transformed into work and 10-20% into heat.
• If a motor gets warmer than it should, efficiency decreases and energy is wasted
• How much can you save?
• Depends on size and age, on type of facility, and on scope of energy logging
• Facilities with good proactive-maintenance programs can expect to identify savings of 10-20%
• Facilities where maintenance still fights a lot of fires can identify savings of up to 30%

  Identify and quantify:
  1.	Thermal scan for hotspots indicating inefficient usage.
  2.	Log power over time: How much power consumed at what time of day and with what amount of waste.
  3.	Vibration and electrical inspections as follow up to issues detected in steps 1 and 2.

  1.	Excessive leaks in compressed air lines lead to excess operation to maintain supply.
  2.	Compressors left on outside of time of usage.
  Identify and quantify:
  1.	Power log at compressor to baseline consumption.
  2.	Measure pressure at compressor and point of use to determine amount of drop.
  3.	Ultrasound can lines to identify leaks.

• Common wastes:
  1.	Failed steam traps and insufficient insulation wasting steam, causing over-production to maintain necessary supply.
  Identify and quantify:
  1.	Power log at boiler to baseline consumption.
  2.	Thermally scan pipes and traps to identify insulation gaps and blockages.

  1.	Air volumes not balanced or adjusted for time of day/year.
  2.	Leaks in ventilation system.
  3.	Set-point drift, sensor inaccuracy.
  4.	Clogged filters and other mechanical issues forcing. equipment to work harder to compensate.
  Identify and quantify:
  1.	Log power consumption by ventilation and conditioning equipment.
  2.	Thermally scan mechanical equipment, sensors, ventilation joints and registers.

  1.	Insulation gaps allowing unintentional transfer of conditioned air, causing over-production of the ventilation system.
  Identify and quantify:
  1.	Log power consumption by ventilation and conditioning equipment.
  2.	Thermally scan building envelope to identify leaks.

• Common wastes:
  1.	Incandescent bulbs still in use.
  2.	No controls automatically modulating usage for time of day/year.
  Identify and quantify:
  1.	Log power consumption by lighting system.
  2.	Measure current illumination level vs. requirements.
